What To Know When You've Been Selected

Congratulations on being selected for a Micro-Internship! In this article, you will find information about:

How Do You Know That You've Been Selected

You will find out that you've been selected for a project via an email from Parker Dewey (support@parkerdewey.com) with the subject line Congratulations [Your Name]. This email will:

  1. Provide the point of contact at the company (also referred to as your project supervisor) and their email address.  You should reach out to them ASAP to set up a kickoff meeting.
  2. Recommend additional next steps if you are an international student.

If this is your first opportunity with Parker Dewey, you will also receive a separate email with a unique link to set up an account in our payroll system, Tipalti.  That email should come to you within 48 business hours of being selected for your Micro-Internship.

What Should You Do First

The "Congratulations" email that you received outlines important next steps that you should take as soon as you are selected for a Micro-Internship.  These steps are:

  1. Email your supervisor to set up a kickoff call.  You should do this unless you have already been contacted by your project supervisor and informed that a kickoff call is not necessary.  Here's a template that you can use for this email.

  2. If you are an international student, complete the Offer Letter request form.

Keep in mind, you're not alone as you work on this project! You can reach out to Parker Dewey at support@parkerdewey.com at any time if you have questions.

Tracking Hours

It is not necessary for you to track the amount of time that you spend working on your Micro-Internship.  All payments are fixed-fee meaning that you are paid the same amount irrespective of the total amount of time spent.

If the scope of your project has changed and it looks like you will need more time to complete the project than it was originally expected to take, please notify the Parker Dewey Support Team immediately.

If a company offers you a bonus during your project, please notify the Parker Dewey Support Team immediately so that it can be properly processed.

Kickoff Meeting Success Tips

Use this list of tips and resources to help you plan your Micro-Internship kickoff meeting.  These resources include:

  • An email template to use when you first reach out to your supervisor
  • Questions to ask during the kickoff meeting (check out the SMART Goals Guide)
  • An email template to customize and send after the kickoff meeting is complete.

Communicating with Your Project Supervisor

During your Kickoff Meeting, you should plan to ask your supervisor how you would like to stay in touch with them throughout the project.  You should ask questions such as:

  • How do you prefer to be contacted (Phone, Email, etc.)? Make sure you have the appropriate number(s) and email address.
  • Will there be any time(s) during the project that the supervisor is unavailable due to vacations, conferences, etc.?
  • Are there other point(s) of contact that you should contact if your primary supervisor is unavailable?
  • When does the supervisor want to meet again to check in about the project?  You should plan on reconnecting with your project supervisor at least once during the project to share the work you have completed so far and to make sure you are meeting their expectations.  Here is a sample agenda that you can use for these mid-project check-in meetings.
  • How often does your supervisor want an update about the project?
  • What are the deadlines that you need to meet for this project?  Other than the final deadline, your supervisor may request that you complete/submit a portion of the project by a specific deadline.

Additionally, review these tips about the importance of timely communication to ensure that you are communicating as professionally as possible with your supervisor.

When to Use (and Not Use) AI

Artificial Intelligence can be a great tool to use as a starting point for generating ideas or giving you a frame of reference.  However, as a general rule, you should NOT use AI when working on the actual project as that would be a violation of Parker Dewey's Artificial Intelligence Policy. Employers often use Parker Dewey because they're hiring for longer-term roles and they want to see a potential candidates' skills in action.

You should only use AI if the project description specifically requests that the Micro-Intern uses AI.  Your project deliverables should be the result of your work - not an algorithm.

Submitting Your Final Project

Every project is different.  During your project kickoff meeting, you should clarify with your supervisor how they would like to receive your final project.  These details may include:

  • Final deadline for the project to be completed
  • Format that the final project should be in (pdf, ppt, Google Slides, etc.)
  • Do you need to submit additional supporting documentation (e.g. research sources)?
