Glossary of Terms for All Users
Micro-Internships: Short-term, paid, professional projects designed to help employers engage, assess, and hire college students and recent graduates.
Career Launchers: Individuals who are seeking to complete Parker Dewey Micro-Internships. Career Launchers are typically students and recent graduates of US-based postsecondary institutions or US-based postsecondary certification programs or other training providers who work with individuals who are early in their target professional career. Career Launchers must be at least 18 years old and legally authorized to work in the United States.
Project-Based: Micro-Internships are designed to be value-added projects that have a defined deliverable that the Micro-Intern is expected to complete. They are not intended to be ongoing engagements that would be completed by a part-time or full-time employee. This decision tree can help companies determine if the project they have in mind is appropriate for a Micro-Internship.
Fixed-Fee: Payment for a Micro-Internship is based on a set amount of pay, not based on completing a certain number of hours. Assuming the project is completed successfully, the Micro-Intern will receive the full amount irrespective of the number of hours of work.
Deliverable: The final work product that the Micro-Intern is expected to complete at the duration of the project.
Milestones: Components of the final deliverable (work product). Delivering these components to the project supervisor helps to indicate that the project is on-track. They also serve as a useful opportunity for a Micro-Intern and Project Supervisor to meet if expectations are not being met.
Independent Contractor: This is how a Micro-Intern is classified from a legal and tax perspective. As an independent contractor, the Micro-Intern is self-employed and responsible for applicable taxes. For more information, Micro-Interns should review the IRS Guidance for Managing Gig Work.
Affiliation: When creating an account, prospective Micro-Interns can add affiliations to their profile to indicate their membership.
-
- Affiliations are added based on partnerships Parker Dewey establishes with mission-driven nonprofits and other organizations supporting job seekers who are early in their professional careers.
- Companies can choose to post a Micro-Internship exclusively to one or more Affiliations depending on their recruiting goals.
- Other affiliations that can be added include: Honors Student, Veteran, and Student-Athlete
Micro-Interns should not add any affiliations unless they are currently involved with that organization. If they have graduated, they should remove their affiliation unless instructed to do otherwise.
Glossary of Terms for Employers
Unbundling: Identifying specific projects that a Micro-Intern could complete within an overall set of responsibilities or timeframe. This strategy can help organizations identify potential Micro-Internships. Companies are also encouraged to use the Project Builder or Project Templates to get some ideas on what may work well as a Micro-Internship.
Conversion fees: A placement cost that an employer pays to staffing companies or a contractor platform in order to hire a temporary worker, freelancer or independent consultant as a permanent, direct-hire within their organization. Parker Dewey does not charge any conversion or temp-to-perm fees if they wish to directly hire a Micro-Intern.
NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement): A legally binding contract between parties designed to maintain confidentiality by preventing sensitive information from being shared with unauthorized third parties or competitors. All Parker Dewey Micro-Interns execute an NDA upon signing up for the Parker Dewey platform (see Section 6 of the Contractor Terms of Use).
Project Templates: A library of project ideas that have been repeatedly posted and completed as Parker Dewey Micro-Internships. Clicking on a project template will pre-populate most of the fields so that clients can easily customize and post a Micro-Internship.
- Clients can change any of the information in these fields before it is posted.
- Clients are also encouraged to use the Project Builder to receive support when posting a Micro-Internship.
Draft Project: A project status that should be used when a project has been created but is not ready to be reviewed by the Parker Dewey team.
Awaiting Approval: A project status when a project is waiting to be reviewed by the Parker Dewey Support Team to determine if it is appropriate for the Parker Dewey platform. Projects are reviewed within two business days. Clients will be contacted if updates are needed in order for a project to be approved.
Pause Applications: A setting that clients can use to temporarily stop a Micro-Internship posting from receiving additional applications. This setting is typically used when companies wish to interview candidates who have already applied but who may reopen the project to receive additional applicants after the initial interview process has been completed.
Approve a Candidate: Clients should select this option when they wish to select one or more Micro-Interns for their project. This can be found in the “Actions” menu.
Complete Project: Clients should select this option when a Micro-Intern has completed their project. If multiple Micro-Interns are working on the same project, the Client can mark one or more Micro-Interns’ projects as completed while leaving the other projects as “in-progress.” Alternatively, the client can select “Complete Project” if the entire project has been completed by all of the assigned Micro-Interns.
Awaiting Feedback: A category within the Parker Dewey Client dashboard where a project has been completed but one or more Micro-Interns have not received feedback from the project supervisor.
