Glossary of Terms for All Users

Micro-Internships: Short-term, paid, professional projects designed to help employers engage, assess, and hire college students and recent graduates.

Career Launchers: Individuals who are seeking to complete Parker Dewey Micro-Internships. Career Launchers are typically students and recent graduates of US-based postsecondary institutions or US-based postsecondary certification programs or other training providers who work with individuals who are early in their target professional career. Career Launchers must be at least 18 years old and legally authorized to work in the United States.

Project-Based: Micro-Internships are designed to be value-added projects that have a defined deliverable that the Micro-Intern is expected to complete. They are not intended to be ongoing engagements that would be completed by a part-time or full-time employee. This decision tree can help companies determine if the project they have in mind is appropriate for a Micro-Internship.

Fixed-Fee: Payment for a Micro-Internship is based on a set amount of pay, not based on completing a certain number of hours. Assuming the project is completed successfully, the Micro-Intern will receive the full amount irrespective of the number of hours of work.

Deliverable: The final work product that the Micro-Intern is expected to complete at the duration of the project.

Milestones: Components of the final deliverable (work product). Delivering these components to the project supervisor helps to indicate that the project is on-track. They also serve as a useful opportunity for a Micro-Intern and Project Supervisor to meet if expectations are not being met.

Independent Contractor: This is how a Micro-Intern is classified from a legal and tax perspective. As an independent contractor, the Micro-Intern is self-employed and responsible for applicable taxes. For more information, Micro-Interns should review the IRS Guidance for Managing Gig Work.

Affiliation: When creating an account, prospective Micro-Interns can add affiliations to their profile to indicate their membership.

    • Affiliations are added based on partnerships Parker Dewey establishes with mission-driven nonprofits and other organizations supporting job seekers who are early in their professional careers.
    • Companies can choose to post a Micro-Internship exclusively to one or more Affiliations depending on their recruiting goals.
    • Other affiliations that can be added include: Honors Student, Veteran, and Student-Athlete
Micro-Interns should not add any affiliations unless they are currently involved with that organization. If they have graduated, they should remove their affiliation unless instructed to do otherwise.

1099: A type of form issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that is used to report income received from, among other sources, work as a freelancer or independent contractor. Micro-Interns will receive a 1099-NEC if they receive $600 or more from Parker Dewey in the previous calendar year.

Career Launchers are encouraged to include all of the postsecondary institutions that they have attended in their Parker Dewey profile.

Major/Program: The degree or academic program that the Micro-Intern is currently pursuing or pursued in the past.

This includes individuals who entered without inspection, overstayed temporary visas, or those who previously had or are currently waiting to adjust their legal status (Source: Immigrants Rising)

Featured Micro-Internships: Micro-Internships where the host organization has chosen to limit the posting so that only Career Launchers from one or more schools or affiliations will be able to see and apply to that opportunity. The Career Launchers must have that school or affiliation listed in the appropriate section of their Parker Dewey profile. Students may not see “Featured Micro-Internships” when they log into Parker Dewey.

All Open Micro-Internships: Micro-Internships that are not restricted to Career Launchers based on the students’ school (s) or affiliation(s).

Start Date: The date that the client expects the Micro-Intern to begin working on the project.

Due Date: The date that the Micro-Internship deliverable(s) is due to the client.

Est. Hours: This stands for “estimated hours” and is the expected number of hours that it will take the Micro-Intern to complete the project. Assuming the project is completed satisfactorily, the Micro-Intern’s compensation will be the same irrespective of the total amount of time that it takes to complete.
